A Unique Proposal for Using Two Phones

I’ve been using two cell phones for a long time. However, the way I use my two phones is a bit unique.

Many people use two phones. If one uses a main phone and a sub phone, in most cases, they are divided into work and non-work purposes.

My way of using two phones is a bit unique. I divide them into communication and focus purposes.

Communication Phone #1:

– Main uses: Calls, Slack, KakaoTalk, Text messages, Telegram, WhatsApp, LINE, simple web surfing, Instagram
– All contacts, including KakaoTalk messages, are directed to this communication phone. It doesn’t matter whether it’s for work or personal use.
– Freely install messenger apps.
– The plan is an unlimited calling plan.

Focus Phone #2:

– Main uses: YouTube, SpeakVoca, Kindle, Studyfy, Spotify, alarms
– The essence is to do something on the phone but create an environment that allows focusing.
– Do not install any messenger apps, and block all notifications to not ring at all.
– The plan is the minimal one with only data.

When I’m doing tasks that require concentration, such as using SpeakVoca, watching YouTube, reading on Kindle, or studying English with Studyfy, being interrupted by notifications or calls can be distracting. And I prefer to keep the focus phone by my side while I sleep, except for the alarm, so I don’t wake up to calls or messages.

The advantage of doing this is that I can control the time I get distracted. The situations I want to avoid are when I spend time unintentionally, as follows.

Example: I go on YouTube to look up something I’m curious about -> I check KakaoTalk -> I check Instagram -> I get lost in fun reels and spend an hour..

Writing this down, I realize that the reason I can divide my phones this way is because of my philosophy of working 24/7, so there’s no need to strictly differentiate between work and personal contacts. For those who want to separate work-life balance, they might think they need at least three phones, but that seems too inefficient to me.

If you can’t separate yourself from work all day, definitely give this a try. It’s the result of years of exploration, not leaving my fate in the hands of others.

P.S. If I’m slow to respond, it’s because I’m either focusing on something or sleeping.
